[Title] Fuel Economy and Pennzoil Synthetic Motor Oils: How to Get Better Fuel Economy
Description: Shanna from Pennzoil discusses how to get better fuel economy
[In vision]
Shanna stands at a workbench, surrounded by automotive tools as well as beakers filled with fluids.
Shanna: Hi, I’m Shanna, and you’re watching “Know Your Oil,” brought to you by Pennzoil. In this video, we’ll be talking about how using the highest-quality motor oil can help provide better fuel economy.

Mechanical Engineer

Shanna has a large coil and two graduated beakers in front of her, one with a clear liquid and the other with an amber-colored liquid.
Shanna: Fuel economy is improved when an engine’s mechanical parts operate more efficiently. Motor oil helps this by keeping engine parts clean. [Insert: Picture of an engine]
Shanna: Using a lower-viscosity motor oil can also help improve fuel economy. What’s viscosity? Well, imagine a pool filled with water. [Motions to the beaker with clear fluid.] Now, imagine a pool filled with honey. [Motions to the amber fluid.]
[In vision]
As Shanna speaks, she first puts the coil into the beaker filled with water and then puts it in the honey, demonstrating the difference in thickness.
Shanna: It’s much easier to swim through a pool filled with water, which has a low or thin viscosity, than a pool filled with honey, which has a very high or thick viscosity. [Speaking softly to herself and laughing] Now my hands are dirty.
It’s much easier for an engine to pump a thinner oil, which is one of the reasons why many new vehicles require lower-viscosity engine oils. The technology that goes into building engines is constantly changing and reacting to government regulations on both fuel economy and emissions standards.

As Shanna speaks, she first motions toward a variable valve timer and then picks up a turbocharger part.
Shanna: Many of these technologies, such as variable valve timing and turbochargers, are incredibly sensitive to the buildup of carbon deposits. Pennzoil Synthetics are formulated to help keep engines clean. In fact, compared to a dirty engine, Pennzoil Synthetics can help you drive, on average, an extra 550 miles per year.

Pennzoil Platinum® Full Synthetic motor oil made with natural gas helps provide better fuel economy. By protecting your engine and increasing performance Pennzoil’s premium products increase fuel efficiency--which can save you money at the pump. In fact, we’ve estimated that by using Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic Motor Oil to help keep your engine clean, you can drive, on average, an extra 550 miles per year, versus a dirty engine.1
Better fuel economy means more money in your pocket to spend how you want and more miles to travel where you want to go. At Pennzoil we want to protect more than just your engine, we want to protect your peace of mind.
1Fuel economy measurements made using CAFE cycle under FTP75. Avg of 550 extra miles based on mixed city/highway miles and US avg of 13,476 miles driven per year with 4.1% better MPG vs. a dirty engine. Source fhwa.dot.gov, 2011. Follow OEM recommended oil drain intervals.
