In the adrenaline-fueled arena of motorsports, few events blend precision and excitement quite like drifting. Federico Sceriffo, a seasoned drift driver, embodies the perfect balance of passion and expertise with every maneuver on the track. Renowned for his exceptional control and finesse, Federico approaches drifting as both an art form and a fierce competition. This year, he returned to Formula DRIFT, bringing a wealth of experience and a relentless drive to succeed. Powered by Pennzoil, Federico continues to redefine what’s possible both on and off the track.

Pennzoil caught up with Federico to dive deep into the world of drifting, explore his enduring passion for the sport, and uncover how he gears up for the challenges that lie ahead.

PENNZOIL: Can you give us a “101” breakdown of the sport of drifting, how it works, basic rules and scoring, etc.?

FEDERICO: We arrive at the track, have a briefing with the judges, and they determine who had the best performance. You start at the line with 100 points and lose points for mistakes or not fulfilling the tasks the judges assigned. The key is to fill clipping zones and pass over clipping points as precisely as possible. The best drivers showcase complete control by brushing walls and buffering poles with the nose of the car. In qualifying, only the top 32 advance, and the competition is a head-to-head elimination until it reaches the final two.

PENNZOIL: Why are you so passionate about drifting?

FEDERICO: Drifting is very special because it’s all about controlled chaos. When everything in life feels out of control, the moment you put the car sideways, nothing else matters. It’s a beautiful, harmonic feeling.

PENNZOIL: What makes drifting different from other forms of motorsports?

FEDERICO: It’s similar because we are all competing, and even though around 80 percent of the drivers are real friends with each other outside the competition, once we get on the track, we still want to send them home during the season. While we face the same risks as other motorsports and the cars are incredibly powerful, drifting is unique because there’s no clock. It’s about freestyle driving under the guidance of judges, which sets it apart from the precision of other racing forms.

PENNZOIL: What would you say to a fan who’s never been to a drifting event before? What can they expect?

FEDERICO: Fans can expect easy access to drivers and cars, which is rare in other motorsports. You can come up, shake our hands, and see the cars up close. The experience is a mix of magic and controlled chaos—truly unique.

PENNZOIL: Can you describe what it’s been like to return to Formula DRIFT competition this year?

FEDERICO: Returning to Formula DRIFT has been special and important for me. I feel blessed to still be skillful enough to compete among the best. Having the support of Pennzoil both technically in the cars and emotionally, I’m more determined than ever to outperform any kind of challenge and make a strong comeback.

PENNZOIL: In addition to being a driver, you are an instructor. How do you balance being both, and why do you love teaching?

FEDERICO: For many, teaching can be considered a post-career role. Teaching drifting as an active driver helps us sustain our programs, and we are able to teach the most up-to-date information and techniques. Balancing both roles is challenging, but teaching allows me to pass on my knowledge and passion for drifting. I love seeing students progress and gain confidence on the track. It’s fulfilling to contribute to the growth of the sport while still competing at a high level.

PENNZOIL: Can you describe the importance of formal training in drifting, especially for those looking to pursue a career or build their skills?

FEDERICO: Formal training is crucial for anyone serious about drifting. I always like to say that I can teach the students how to drift safer, cheaper, faster and cooler. Most importantly, formal training provides the foundation needed to control the car and understand the dynamics of the sport. Whether you’re aiming for a career in drifting or just want to improve, proper training can make all the difference.

PENNZOIL: What is it like teaching the only certified training course from Japan’s legendary Team Orange in the United States?

FEDERICO: Teaching the Team Orange certified course is an honor. It’s the most authentic and comprehensive drifting education available in the U.S., given that the sport originated in Japan, and it allows students to learn from the best in the world.

PENNZOIL: Have you had the opportunity to teach any celebrities or motorsports drivers from other sports?

FEDERICO: Yes, I’ve had the chance to teach a few celebrities and drivers from other motorsports. I’ve even taught a few actors and rappers, as well. This year marks 20 years since I began teaching drifting, so it’s safe to say that I’ve taught quite a few people. It’s always interesting to see how they adapt to drifting and bring their own skills to the sport.

PENNZOIL: Can you talk about your partnership with Pennzoil? How has the brand helped to power you and push the limits on and off the track?

FEDERICO: Pennzoil has been a crucial part of my journey. Their support has allowed me to push the limits of what’s possible in drifting. The performance and reliability of their products give me the confidence to perform at my best, both on and off the track. The support of Pennzoil excites and inspires me to perform my best. You elevate everything by having a partner like Pennzoil by your side.

PENNZOIL: Why is using a premium motor oil such as Pennzoil so important? Why does motor oil play such a critical role in engine performance?

FEDERICO: Premium motor oil is vital because it ensures the engine runs smoothly and efficiently, especially under the extreme conditions of drifting. We use Pennzoil Platinum® Racing 10W-60. It’s an oil that doesn’t lose its properties under stress, and that’s important because my car, Fiorella, has more than 1,100 horsepower at the wheel. She revs up to 9,000 RPM. She screams, and it’s beautiful to hear the engine being used fully but safely, so the motor oil is really a key factor in the performance.

PENNZOIL: What makes the connection between engine revs and drifting control so critical?

FEDERICO: Engine revs are everything in drifting. It’s important to have an engine that can sustain high revs for multiple runs during a day because we often have a 70 percent throttle up. Controlling the throttle is essential for maintaining the right angle and speed. It’s what keeps the car balanced and allows you to perform complex maneuvers. In order to do this, you need to have a proper cooling and lubrication system. As I mentioned, we use Pennzoil Platinum® Racing 10W-60, which I like to call “Liquid Gold,” so I can make sure my engine is always in great condition.

PENNZOIL: What does Long May We Drive mean to you?

FEDERICO: In 2024, Long May We Drive represents my 20-year career milestone. It also embodies the passion of driving and is a constant reminder that as long as we keep driving, we keep living our passion.
